   Dora Baxter was Principal of Castle Gardens School from 1946 - 1961
I was speaking to my Aunt Lily recently {July 2013 aged 92} and she told me that Dora was her teacher and that she was an extremely nice lady  who had many little sayings, one of which was "A well dressed person is one who when they damage their clothes, they repair, wash and  iron them, not throw them out and buy more.... " She also informed me that Dora's father was a Mayor of Newtownards and was also heavily involved with the Scouts etc.

Her brother Isaac was later to become the 3rd. Burgess of Newtownards and a great supporter of the Scouting organisations

15th. March 2013 - Hi Derek - I write to congratulate you on your Newtownards site – a lot of very interesting information and a lot of familiar surnames! I was especially pleased to see a pic of my great aunt – Dora Baxter as well as my grandfather Thomas Baxter (jr) – I’d never seen that silver band pic before. band-newtownards-silver.htm   The year it was taken would have been around the time my granddad lost his fiancé in a house fire in Donaghadee (which may explain the black suit – however everyone in that picture looks a bit dour so it’s hard to tell!)! - Thanks again and best wishes to you and yours. - Karl Baxter
