American Newspaper "The Bemidji Daily Pioneer" - Interesting Powder Horn Map
A map engraved on an old powder horn may lead to the location of the sites of several
Cherokee Indian Towns in western North Cariolina according to the Bureau of America
Ethnology in Washington. The powder horn is a loan from Mr. Hugh Kirk of Newtownards, Co.
Down in N.Ireland and dates from around 1750 when the English were beginning to open up
the Cherokee Nation. It belonged to James Grant a member of a company of British soldiers
stationed near Charlestown and Fort Loudoun and Fort Prince George in the Cherokee country
about the time these forts were beseiged. The horn is elaborately engraved with the royal
arms of Great Britain and a map showing the ancient town of Uucassee and other towns in
the region where the soldier served.
