High Street 1798
The 1st.attack on Newtownards Market Hall on the night of Sunday 9th. June 1798
The attack via North Street was headed by Samuel Rankin weilding a sword and William
Davidson of Greenwell Street. In the ensuing battle six United Irishmen were killed,.
James Kain of Ballyferris, John Morrison of Ballywalter, 2 sons of David Maxwell of
Ballywalter, one sone of Stewart a blacksmith from Ballywalter, Andrew Adams of
Ballywalter and one Serjeant and one Soldier of the York Fencibles.
In the attack via Movilla Street Bailie Warden stated afterwards that as they rounded the
corner of High Street and Market Square they were met head on by those
who had attack via North Street and been repulsed and were now fleeing the scene. The two
groups then fled as one and did not stop until they reached the graveyard atop Movilla
hill.
They then tended to their wounded and buried their dead in unmarked graves which cannot
now be found. Some families though were not afraid to admit that their kith and kin were
involved, such as the Kain family,. see family records section under
