May 1843
HoLvwoon, NEAR WATERFORD.-At the meeting of the Temperance Society of this place, on the 10th, inst., the Rev. Jacob Alexander, of Newtownards, next delivered a very lengthened address, and gave a, graphic description of the defence for drinking wine, set up by those who, though they are pledged to abstain from all distilled spirit, must know they are drinking it every day in the " mixed wines" used in Great Britain-while some pleaded only for " their glass of ale" -others " prefer porter," and others would be quite content with their usual bottle of eider"-all condemning intemperance and praising its opposite-all recommending a " proper guardianship" over everything which was used by their neighbours-well knowing that in this " land of liberty" no one will allow his neighbour to be his guardian in these matters, and that all who require care are capable of acting as guardians forthemselves, till, in this way, these advocates of "'sort drinks," as he had heard them called frequently, in various ways, and by degrees, promoted what they condemn, and opposed what they commended. The speaker then went on to contend that teetotallers could, on Scriptural authority, by fair argument, and sound reasoning, prove to a demonstration, their right to abstain from all intoxicating drinks. Two of the ten horns of the apocalyptic beast were the fear of men, and a love of money.
