Erected by a number of friends as a tribute to the memory of W. G. Lyttle, founder and editor of the 'North Down Herald'.  Born at Newtownards, 15th April 1844, died at Bangor 1st November 1896.
"A man of rare natural gifts, he raised himself to a high position among the journalists of Ireland.  He was a brilliant and graceful writer, a true humourist and an accomplished poet.  Robin was a kind friend, a genial companion and a true son of Co.Down". - Buried Bangor Abbey Graveyard - More info here

Lyttle, Wesley Guard - 1880 - Proprietor of The North Down Herald - Later he moved to Bangor - He was famous for his amusing banter in the brogue of an "Ards" farmer and was in quite a demand as an after dinner speaker. His other claims to fame are his three novels, Smugglers of Strangford Lough and Sons of the Sod and the jewel in his crown Betsy Grey or The Hearts of Down.
