From the New York Evening Post McCutcheon, James - 20th. July 1914 aged 72 - {b.c1842} - Of appendicitus @ his summer home in Bellehaven, Geeenwich New York - He had emigrated to the USA in 1860 where he became a very successful merchant. Shortly after arrival he opened a linen store at 748 Broadway near Astor Place, as trade increased the business moved with it and in 1864 was at 845 Broadway then 14th. Street and in 1880 was based at 64~66 West 23rd.Street where it remained for 13 years, at this time he also became first vice-president of the Garfield Bank. In 1907 it moved to its present position at 5th. Avenue and 42nd. Street. He arrived in New York when he was nineteen and went into business with his Uncle John Milliken in the store at Broadway and Astor Place. He was one of a group of Northern Ireland men who at that time controlled the dry-goods business in New York. Some of them were A.T.Stewart, Hugh O'Neill and James McCreery. He was also a banker and director of several companies. In the Grenwich Conn. colony where he had lived for the last 30 years he took a large part in club live being one of the organisers of the Golf Club. His only son Norman died about 9 months ago and he is survived by his daughters Alice and Teodora and nephews James, John and Charles McCutcheon. Three months before his death he retired and handed the running of the company over to James M.Speers. He had also been vice-president and director of the American Ice Securities Co. and trustee of the Garfield Safe Deposit Co. as well as director of the Interstate Investing Co. and director of the Parkes Machine Co. |
