Origins
Art mac Cuinn is the progenitor of this famous surname. The name is derived from Irish Cuinn, specifically through Art mac Cuinn, the son of Conn. In Gaeilge the name represents priest, or chieftain with added emphasis on wisdom and loyalty. The surname rose simultaneously throughout Ireland as the descendants of Conn of the Hundred Battles known as Conn Cétchathach when Conn created the Connachta. Through Art mac Cuinn's 5th Great Grandson Niall Noígíallach, or Niall of the Nine Hostages the Uí Néill was formed and its dynastic reign began.
Local Quinn Septs - Clandeboye, Clann Aodha Buí of Cenél nEógain.

Hello Derek - {Oct.2013}

Do you recall me calling with you one evening with my friend Linda Rowley to find out about pub owners in Ards late 1800s -1900s...I was looking at the Moore side of my grandmothers family but I should have been looking into her fathers side the Quinns.
I noticed on your website that you have my ancestors listed. They are the Quinn family in Georges street. Thomas was my great great granda. the grandfather my granny talked about visiting in the Old Cross INN which was situated in 63 High street. This pub was owned by a Robert Quinn prior and he had either his grandsons or nephews Fred and William Henry working for him. he left the pub to William henry and sadly he died aged 25. Proni will calender have the will listed and the pub had been left to Thomas Quinn. My granny talked about going to visit her family in and around 1918 at the pub, she stayed some times during school holidays. She remembers them selling ice-cream and talked about the awe man drinking all the profits.One of my grandmothers aunts lived in court street.She married a guy with surname cavan. They had a son called Harry Cavan and he was my grannies cousin. Harry was a well know guy in the football world. You may well remember him or off know off him.
Derek would you like to put this info unto your page. The Quinns lived in georges street in 1901 census and 1911..My great granda George Quinn left Ards to look for work in the Ship yard. he met and married Eleanor sullivan Moore of Holywood and settled in Cuba street. George was killed in the ship yard at age 56. His overall caught on the roller machine. I have a copy of the coroners report. One of Georges brother Andrew immigrated to America. my mums cousins gave me that information. you also have him listed on your website! My great grandather George called all his children after his own siblings. They were Lizzie (my granny) clara, George Henry, Tom, Andy and William (Willy)
I wonder who took over the Old cross inn after Thomas. It may well have closed down. I wonder how old the pub was and was it called the stage coach Inn years prior as that is what I was told.
I also wonder if there are any Quinns in Ards that could be a family connection
Derek me again! I found more info ..My grandmother's aunts Lizzie and Clara Quinn married 2 of the Cavan brothers Walter and Thomas.. Clara married walter in St marks in 1915 they are the parents of Harry Cavan my grannies cousin. Lizzie married Thomas in 1916 in same church. my mum said as a wee girl she went to visit an old aunt of her mothers in court street. i wonder is there any street directories for around 1950s. to see if I can find her listed........
