Where a name and year only appear then death was registered in Newtownards
Russal, Robert - 29th. December 1771 aged 27 - A stone cutter - Buried in Priory Graveyard
This story was recently unearthed by Drew Melville -
RAB RUSSAL THE STONECUTTER
The Story you are about to read was written by Francis Joseph Bigger and published in
1918, it is particular interest locally because it tells of the life of a young man
Rab Russal, from Co.Down who carried on the trade of stone cutting in Newtownards, 250
years ago. To-day many of the old date plates on houses in the town still bear his trade
mark the letter R.In this story, adapted from Mr Biggers book
FOUR SHOTS OF DOWN the author has captured the magic of that time and
describes the town with vivid imagination.Rab Russal, himself, died when he was 27 years
of age but he left his mark on the town of Ards. FOUR days after the Christmas of
1771, Rab Russal, the young stonecutter of Newtownards, had carved his last letter and had
laid down his mallet and his chisel for ever, and in due course was laid in his last bed
at the foot of the pillar in the old abbey, upon which he had carved his epitaph, for he
must have known his end was approaching.
The date was added by another hand not so cunning
in the art at which he excelled. His age was only twenty-seven, so he was in his early
prime. Two years before, he had cut on an adjoining pillar the name and date of Elizabeth
Scott, a sixteen year old friend of his own. His carving was clear, clean and steady and
can be easily recognized amongst others not so masterly throughout the abbey. Here and
there in different places we find an R carved; it may have stood for Robert or Russal, for
he was one who evidently loved his work and took a pride in it. He had a noble example
around him in the work of the friars, who had built the abbey five hundred years before
his day, and added the columns and beautified the sanctuary over three centuries before he
carved his name on the pillar they had raised. We cannot say what old strain of blood
gave him his pride, for the Russells had been long in Down, they were there before the
abbey whose stones he had engraved; they had lands in abundance, and had founded churches
and built castles. Others of the name crossed the sea at the plantation. Rab Russal died
young, and his death was not unanticipated by him, and as he worked for others he did not
forget his own record, and he was worthy of it.
