1572
The attention of the English Government was now for a moment concentrated upon Ulster and more particularly on the Ards. Thomas Smith, son of Sir Thomas
Smith, Queen Elizabeth's secretary, was granted the Lower Ards by the Queen, to occupy and settle; and Essex started upon his inglorious expedition to Antrim.
On the 31st August, a.d. 1572, Smith landed at Strangford with the intention of establishing himself in the Ards north of the Blackstaffe River;
by the loth September he had withdrawn his soldiers from Newtownards to Ringhaddy, in the Dufferin;
on the 20th October Essex informed the Privy Council from Carrickfergus that he (Smith) had been slain by Irishmen of his own (Smith's) household,
whom he had trusted ; and on the 28th of the same month Essex announced that he had gone himself to the help of Comber, and that Smith's men had been conducted
into the Little Ards by Raymond Ferdorough Savage of Ardkeen. As, however, these movements of Smith and Essex concerned the Savages of Ardkeen more
than the Savages of Portaferry, we shall reserve a fuller consideration of them for our continuation of the history of the Ardkeen family.^ On the 2nd December,
A.D. 1573, however, Essex wrote that all the freeholders in the Ards had joined in rebellion with Nele Mac Bryan Fertough, especially Raymond Savage of Ard-
keen (" Ferdorough Mac Seneschal "), and the rest (of the Savages) except " Savage, chief of the name " (evidently Patrick Savage of Portaferry), " Denis
Smyth, and James Mac Jeniake Savage" (Raymond's brother). The two latter, however, were sending supplies and intelligence to the rebels.

1842 - Newtownards Court House

NEWTOWNARDS. -- ALLEGED HOMICIDE BY A STEPFATHER. -- On Thursday the 23d instant, much excitement was created in this town, by the death of a young lad named Smyth, who was reported to have met his death from brutal ill-treatment by his step-father. An inquest was held on the body on Friday, by Dr. Tyrrell of Banbridge, coroner for the county of Down, and a respectable jury. However, after the examination of the body, by a medical gentleman of experience -- Dr. Simpson of Newtownards -- the charge against the person accused was clearly disproved, and the fact established that the boy had died from natural disease. The jury, after a brief consultation, returned a verdict in accordance with the evidence.

Smith, Joseph b.1844 - 6th. May 1862 - Emigrated to the USA via Liverpool on the ship "Manchester"

Smith, Hugh of Comber - 30th. April 1866 - His wife Agnes Smith nee McDowell of Comber - and family waited until her husband had gone to work and then gathered the family together and travelled to Belfast to board the ship "John Bright" and emigrated to the USA leaving behind her husband Hugh and son Hiram - Hiram had slipped away before boarding and returned to his fathers house.

This family travelled by mule train across America to Utah just as seen in the "Old West" Holywood movies.
Thomas’ brother, Joseph Smith, met them when they arrived in the old tithing yard.  He took them to a home he had prepared for them and soon they were all seated at a table spread with good food. They were delighted to be eating at a table after eating around a campfire for three months.                   When they reached Salt Lake City in the fall of 1866, Thomas’ brother Joseph had a small log house ready for them to move into. It was on State and Broadway where the Center Theater now stands. In Salt Lake City, the boys built a carpenter shop and Agnes took in sewing; thus they provided for themselves until May, 1870.  They lived in Salt Lake City for four years before being called to help settle Randolph.
