The McGimpseys of Newtownards were a breakaway group from the O'Dhiomasiagh clan who are now called Dempsey or O'Dempseys who still live in Eire, they refused to sign a treaty of allegiance with the English and sought refuge in Northern Ireland then on to Scotland where they settled around the Kircudbright area of Galloway as tennants of Lord Kirkudbright and the Clan McLellan. Eight of these McGimpseys returned to Ulster and fought at the seige of Derry and seven of them survived to settle around Newtownards in the townlands of Drumawhy and Loughriescouse with one member settling in Ballyhay close to Donaghadee.
