Belfast News-Letter, 7 February 1800

CAUTION TO ORANGEMEN
Not to associate with S
AMUEL BLACK, late of No 316, Coleraine, he being expelled for
improper Conduct from that, and all other Orange Societies for ever.
Signed by Order of the District Master Coleraine
JAMES M'ILWAIN, Sec. Feb 5, 1800

The Belfast News-Letter, 26 April 1800
ORANGE.

AT a Meeting of Lodge No. 673, held at Portaferry on Tuesday the 1st April, 1800.
Resolved—That we highly disapprove of the introduction of Political Subjects into Orange Lodges, considering such as foreign to the object of our Institution, as it must finally prove fatal to the Institution itself.
Resolved—That our thanks be returned to the Grand Lodge, for their well timed instructions upon this subject, which, with any others they may favour us with, we are determined to abide by.
            PAT. GALWAY, M.
            JOHN ECHLIN, D. M.
            EDW. T. SAVAGE, Sec.

CAUTION TO ALL ORANGE-MEN.

WE, the Masters of No. 75 - 113 - 125 and 287 Lodges of Orange-men, having fairly tried and considered the Conduct of DAVID M'MURRY, of Dromore, are unanimously agreed—That the said DAVID M'MURRY ought to be excluded from all Societies of Orangemen in this Kingdom. And he is hereby excluded from our Societies, of which all Orange-men are hereby to take Notice. Given under our Hands at Dromore, this 12th Day of April, 1800.
            JOHN WARING, District Master.
            CHRIST. QUIN, D. District Master.
            SAMUEL CRAIG, Master.
            JOHN SMITH, Master.
            WILLIAM M'DEDE, Master.
            JOHN IRVINE, Master

William Johnston of Ballykilbeg, reacts to 1867 Representation of the People Act, giving votes to artisans and halving property qualification in 1870. Led great parade against advice of Orange Lodge, Newtownards to Bangor, 12 July 1867, in defiance of Party Procession Act [intro. Aug. 1823]; refused to apologise to authorities, and sentenced to short prison spell, Feb. 1868; ‘fearless’ and ‘indomitable’; rapturous applause at Indignation meeting called in Belfast on his release; he said ‘we will have an Orange Party, please God, after a while in the House of Commons; stood on his own account, rather than for the Conservatives, in 1868 general election; won seat, as did Thomas McClure, Presbyterian tobacco maker [356] Johnston did however vote for the Land Bill in February 1870, showing his difference from the Conservative, land-owning party. [358] Bardon comments [356]: triumph of Johnston in Belfast did warn the Conservatives that they could not rely on deference where landlord influence was weak that a populist traditional loyalism might well b the way to win support of the new enfranchised artisans

Stuart McClean spotted Blakely Anderson far right behind drummers with dark hair and glasses and just in front of him is
Freddy Taylor Snr.       Barry Tate has added these names, drummer with polo shirt is his late Uncle John Tate who passed away during the 1974 parade and gent behind him with white hair is Tom McKee.
