Newtownards Chronicle February
1912 - Petty Sessions Court
James Adair of Ballycullen summoned Rachel Gourley of
Ballycullen for unlawfully throwing stones at his dwelling on 13th. February and for using
language likely to cause a breach of the peace. Rachael Gourley already had a case against
James Adair for using abusive and threatening language on 6th. February.
Mr. T.C. Mackintosh appeared for Gourley.
Adair deposed that he lived in William Boyd's at Ballycullen, he denied striking Gourleys
little brother, he did not see Gourley throw the stones but he had a witness who did.
Mr. Mackintosh: "Who is this witness"
Adair: "My wife"
Mr. Mackintosh: "When did you marry her"
Adair: "About six weeks ago in Belfast"
Mr. Mackintosh: "Who married you"
Adair: " I couldn't tell you" {Laughter}
Mr. Mackintosh: "Is your wife not living in Comber and this is another one"
Adair: "Yes"
Mr. Mackintosh: "Do you have a third one..?"
Adair: "No, just the two" {Laughter}
Mary Sibbles gave evidence that she was looking through the room window and saw Rachel
Gourley stoop and lift a stone throwing it on the slated roof. She did not hear her using
any language.
Rachel Gourley deposed that she was afraid for her life to pass Adairs door and had always
to get protection. In company with her brother she spoke to Adair about striking her other
little brother, when he said he would strike anybody and called her abusive names. The
bench dismissed both cases on merits.
