Gibson, William John - 5th. February 1910 - Of Movilla Street - Was charged in court that on that date with assaulting and causing serious bodily injury to Mary Girvan. Mr.Alexander Stewart appeared for Mr. Gibson. Dist.Insp. Lennon said that he understood that Girvan had absconded and she was the principal witness. The case had been adjourned from the Petty Sessions but there was no further evidence to be given. He would not have objection to the charge being reduced to one of common assault if the defendant would plead guilty so as to enable the case to be disposed of but otherwise he would have to apply for a warrant for the arrest of Mary Girvan. The whole case was ready to go forward to the Quarter Sessions. He understood that since last Court appearance Girvan had gone back to Gibson and was living with him. The case was adjourned to next court, the defendant being allowed out on same bail of himself £20 and two sureties of £10 each.

Obituary of Mr James Gibson MM
Ref
- The Newtownards Chronicle and County Down Observer Sat 15th Aug 1953.
Innumerable Servicemen and ex-servicemen not only in County Down but throughout the
Province have learned with infinite sorrow of the death on Sunday of Mr James Gibson MM of
North Street Newtownards.
The name of the Gibson will not be forgotten in British Legion circles locally. During the
past thirty years or more, Mr Gibson played a major role in building up the Newtownards
Branch. The name of Gibson, in fact most synonymous with that of the Legion - a movement
to which he devoted his unflagging interest and boundless energy.
All Legion Honours.
It is indeed, a happy thought that during the course of his lifetime his services were
recognised and fully appreciated by his fellow comrades. Not only is his name enshrined in
the hall erected a few years at the rear of the headquarters in Court Square, but he was
presented with that supreme Legion award, the Gold Medal and Life Membership Certificate
and - only a few weeks ago - a Certificate of Appreciation from the Haig Fund. In his
lifetime in fact, he received all the honours the movement can bestow.
It was in September 1914, that Mr Gibson joined the 13th BN The Royal Irish Rifles but he
transferred to the 36th Divisional (Signals) Royal Engineers, with whom he won the
Military Medal for bravery on the field at Cambria in 1917.
Some years after his discharge from the Army, this quietly spoken, sincere and unobtrusive
man of action became an employee of the then Newtownards Urban Council and he spent the
last 15 years as their foreman.
"Service, not self"
It is difficult to express in mere words the amount of work which Mr Gibson did for the
British Legion. Only First World War veteran members can fully appreciate it - but, as
would have been his dearest wish, the success of his magnificent efforts are reflected in
the prosperity of the movement locally and in the excellent headquarters which the Branch
is proud to possess.
His unceasing labours on behalf of War comrades served to emphasise that here indeed was a
man who truly made his code and conduct of life the organisations noble motto
Service not self
He transformed this service into action on countless occasions. In 1921
for instance, when the first legion hall was built he was the inspiring leader of a small
group of zealous workers who dismantled a hut at Clandeboye and re-erected it at Victoria
Avenue. On another occasion, with his brother Mr William Gibson, and some other comrades,
he erected the memorial plinth that still stands beside that hall.
Gibson Hall
Later, when the Court Square premises were acquired, he played a major roll in dissembling
a hut at Ards Airport and re-erecting it at the rear of the headquarters. It was indeed,
fitting that because of his tireless and enthusiastic work in this connection, the
building was named the James Gibson Hall. At that time too, he was given the guest of
honour at the diner given by the members and at it he was presented with the Legions
Gold Medal and life membership Certificate. Mr Gibson gained for the honour as standard
bearer of No 8 Group and he was chosen to carry the new colours for the first time on the
occasion of the Queen Mothers visit to Northern Ireland He also acted in the same
capacity when the Princess Royal visited Newtownards for a Red Cross Society function.
Another aspect of Legion work in which MR Gibson took part was the
annual whist drives which at one time formed the principle source of income for the
Benevolent Fund in which he took a deep and abiding interest.
Poppy Day Work
The annual Poppy Day occupied a vast amount of time and energy and for thirty years he did
magnificent work as organiser. Only a few weeks ago he received a letter from the
Directors of Appeals, British Legion, Haig Fund, in London complimenting him on his
wonderful assistance and outstanding services and presenting him with a Certificate of
Appreciation. An indication of his stupendous work for the Legion locally is the fact that
for thirty years he held the combined office of Branch Secretary and Services Committee
Secretary.
He was a staunch participant in Civic Defence work in Newtownards since
its inception, and he was a member of Unity Masonic Lodge No 433 Newtownards.
We tender sincerest sympathy to his wife and son, Mr Tom Gibson; his mother, who lives in
Balfour Street, and his three sisters Mrs Patton, Corrys Quarter; Mrs R
Johnston, Marquis Street; and Mrs S Orr, Bangor.
Comrades Salute
The large attendance at the funeral to Movilla Cemetery on Tuesday was a striking
indication of the warmth of regarding which he was held, not only in the ex-service
circles, but in all works of life locally.
The final salute by his fellow comrades was a singularly moving one.
Behind the coffin, draped with the Branch Colours, marched long files of ex-servicemen
wearing poppys which they later dropped into the grave.
The chief mourners were Mr Tom Gibson (son), Mr William Gibson
(brother), Messers S Patton, R Johnston, and S Orr (brothers-in-law).
Many Wreaths
There were many beautiful flora tributes from not only Mr Gibsons family and other
relatives, but from the Newtownards Branch of the British Legion; the Mayor, Aldermen and
Councillors of the Borough of Newtownards; fellow workmen in the Borough Surveyors
Department; Town Department Staff, Borough Council; Newtownards Civil Defence Corps; and
the offices and members of Unity Masonic Lodge No 443.
Services at the house and graveside were conducted by the Rev A M Adams, BSc, BD

David Hollinger adds that the shop on the left beside the Triumph Herald etc. was owned by
the Gibson sisters
and the one on the corner right was owned by Jackie Hillis who caused a stir when in his
shop window he published the names of
those who owed him money,. David lived for quite a time at 38 Upper Movilla Street
E.Mail from Anne Martin December 2015
I think this photo is of one of the Gibson brothers (twins I think) who lived in Movilla
St . They were both very active in Greenwell St church and in orange affairs.
At least one of the brothers worked in Walkers.
Whether this photo is Willie Gibson or his brother I can't say.
