McDonald, John - 27th. March 1926 - Newtownards Chronicle - This article appeared - Copies are available from the Newspaper Library in Belfast
"A Newtownards Knitter 100 years ago" - In the "Whig" of thursday 25th. March 1826 the following paragraph appears which will, we are sure, be read with interest as the McDonald family have long been identified with Newtownards. Some of the descendants of the John McDonald referred to live at the present time in the vicinity of Corrys Quarter, and are still famed for their knowledge of weaving, the paragraph referred to reads .....
A specimen of knitting of much ingenuity has been produced at our office. John MCDonald of Newtownards who is perhaps the most perfect knitter in Ireland has manufactured a very handsome frock coat from cop cotten without the aid of any description of machinery save the simple use of two wire needles, the cotten having been doubled and twisted solely by his fingers. The coat fits remarkably well, is without a seam and the neck, cuffs, buttons etc... are fashionably formed entirely by the knitting process. The same individual some time since, produced with his two incomparable needles a bed quilt 2 1/2 yards long by 2 1/4 yards wide. It was without a seam and the Royal Masons Arms exquisitly worked in the centre. The quilt was presented by McDonald to the Marsioness of Londonderry
