Obituary. lt is with deep regret that I have to record the death, at the age of 47 - {b.c1854}, of Mrs R. McKeagg, who was well known and much respected throughout the Taieri district. Deceased was a native of Newtownards, Co.Down, Ireland. She was buried on Friday 27th. September in the East Taieri Cemetery, and a large concourse from all parts of the Taieri assembled to pay the last token of respect to deceased. The late Mrs M'Keag was a general favourite throughout the district, for it mattered not who came her way she made them as happy as the flowers in May. She leaves a family of seven daughters and four sons to mourn their loss, and deep sympathy is felt for Mr McKeagg and family in their bereavement. Of the children the four youngest are pairs of twins, three daughters and one son.

This is James McKeag originally of Loughriescouse and his wife Jane McKeag nee
Connelly with two of their daughters around 1914. They are embroidering cloth or
flooerin (flowering). James born James Keag on an island at Greyabbey.
He was a soldier who fought in the Crimean War in the 1860s. Jane was a nurse of
sorts who delivered babies and would have helped out new mothers for a while until they
could cope a bit better as well as nursing less able or sick people in general. When my
Grandas cousins wife died after her dress
caught light at the fire, just up the road, Jane was one of the first to answer her cries.
When James died in 1917 he had a full military funeral to his resting place in Ballyblack
churchyard. The coffin was carried on a gun carriage which was pulled by sailors because
all the horses had been taken for the war. Was there anybody belonging to you who would
have known James and Jane and witnessed these events? We can help you find out
