E.mail April 2014 - from Mark Anderson Great Nephew of William Anderson
John Anderson of Ballywatticock, Newtownards, married Suzanna Armour in
Greenwell Street Presbyterian Church in January 1893 - as with many Ards folk at
that time, they moved to the city of Belfast looking for work. They settled at 8, Kenbaan
Street, East Belfast, there they had 4 children William 1893, James 1895, Johnny 1900 and
Eleanor Jane 1902. Sadly soon after the birth of their daughter, Suzanna died tragically -
I have been unable to trace John's death just yet, however it is assumed that he died soon
after his wife, as the family was split up. James and Eleanor Jane stayed in Belfast with
Suzanna's brother, whilst William and Johnny moved back to John's hometown of Newtownards,
where they were taken in and raised by their great aunt Jane Anderson at Greenwell Street.
William signed the Ulster Covenant like many of his time and soon thereafter joined the
UVF, signing up in the Mary Street Orange Hall. After basic training he was ready to make
his stand in Carson's Army, however with a twist of fate the Great War began and William
joined the 13th Battalion, 36th Ulster Division. William was a keen motor cyclist and was
soon drafted into the newly formed Motor Machine Gun Corps (MMGC)
William's journey through the First World War is mostly untraceable as many of the records
were destroyed, that said I was able to trace William being gassed by the Germans at
Messines and due to the extent of his injury he returned to Britain for treatment at The
Rest, Porthcawl, South Wales. It was here that William's life was to change, as he met and
feel in love with Elizabeth Davies, one of the volunteer nurses who had treated him. Once
his health improved William returned to the front and served with the MGC until the end of
the war.
On his return from the front William married Elizabeth and they settled in Bridgend, South
Wales, where he opened a motorcycle shop 'Anderson's Motorcycles'. They had 2 children
Ronald D Anderson and Thomas Russell Anderson. Tragedy was to strike again when
Ronald died of TB aged 10 years.
William's health was not great, as he continued to suffer from the effects of being gassed
- this was to play a significant roll in his death.
William was called out to rescue the local Parish Priest who's vehicle had broken down,
William filled his motorcycle with fuel and got on the bike to travel to the aid of the
Priest, sadly William, it is thought ,had a heart attack brought on by his weakened lungs,
his motorcycle careered through his own shop window - he sustained a severe head
injury and sadly after a short stay in hospital William died.
His death was well reported in the local newspaper, where it is stated he was a very
respected member of the community - is brother James had travelled from Belfast to
attend the funeral.
Sadly with the passing of time this story had not been passed down through the Anderson
generations and I was completely oblivious to what I was to find when I began to trace
William. I had assumed William died in battle, during the Great War and that was that -
how wrong I was!
William's wife died leaving Thomas Russell Anderson now aged 12 to be raised by his aunt,
a similar story to his father back in Newtownards a generation before. Thomas served in
the Royal Engineers during World War 2 landing in France on D Day plus 3 - with his main
task an architect, was to design temporary airfields.
On his return home Thomas Russell Anderson married and settled in Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan, where he had 3 sons Paul, Julian and Matthew. He designed and built his own house on a piece of land - he named the family home 'Newtownards'!
I
would like to conclude by saying that at the invitation of the Welsh Anderson (that I did
not know existed) I visited Wick Chapel Cemetary near Cowbridge, in the Vale of
Glamorgan, Wales where I laid a poppy wreath and 3 poppy crosses, on behalf of the
Newtownards Anderson's. I played several tunes on my fife in memory of William Anderson, a
son of Newtownards, who died aged 32 having served his country in the 36th Ulster Division
and later the Motor Machine Gun Corps - an proud Ulsterman!
I would like to thank Derek Beattie for his web-site which assisted me in my research -
a vital piece of local history at your fingertips.
