Dorrian, Jule - 5th. August 2010 aged 93 - {b.c1917}
Mr Julius (Jule) Dorrian, aged 93, on 5th August. In early years he attended Frances Street Gospel Hall, Newtownards, where his father was in fellowship. At 21, Jule joined the army and served in N Africa under Field Marshal Montgomery; he was the last surviving Northern Ireland member of Montgomery’s "Desert Rats". He was ever grateful to God for preservation through the war years, and to faithful sisters of the Frances Street assembly who constantly prayed for his salvation. He was saved in 1972 and bore faithful testimony in his home town of Newtownards. His last 3 years were spent in happy fellowship in the Ballyhay assembly where he was most faithful in his attendance while health permitted. His cheerful disposition, even in illness, endeared him to all, and he will be much missed in the assembly. The very large funeral service was indicative of the high esteem in which he was held by those who knew him.

Jules Dorrian, 5LAA Bty and five other Gunners managed to escape from Rommels troops and were posted to 6LAA Battery.

1942 was the year I escaped from Tobruk. That Friday on the 20th June we watched all the heavy guns and tanks going down the coast road in the direction of El Alamein.
There we were sitting on the wee Bofors 2 pounder on top of a wadi. I said to Captain J Gibson, “There is something wrong here, leaving us here with all the heavy stuff and tanks heading away”.
But it was Rommel and his Afrika Korps coming down from Benghazi. The hospital ship left from Tobruk harbour that Day. My friend McGinn was on board.
The next morning at 6am everything was let loose on us. The shells were going over our heads into the harbour. All we had for breakfast were two sling peaches and a cup of tea. Joe Arnott came along and told us about the first deaths at our position. Captain Gibson, Sgt Davidson, Davy McClinton and an English lad attached to us were killed in their gun pit at the NAAFI bulk stores.
Lt. Craig from Newry ordered Sgt McFadden to send me over to take charge of Sgt Davidson’s gun. The Sgt disagreed and told Lance Sgt Anderson from S. Ireland to go instead. L/Sgt Anderson jumped into a 3 ton lorry driven by Freddy Steels and drove straight into German captivity.
At that stage Lt Craig said it was everybody for them selves. First, we knocked down the sand bags from the top of the gun pit and started firing at the advancing Germans.
They broke through in an 8cwt Bug van and waved a black and white flag for us to surrender. At that stage I was suffering with concussion from the bomb blasts. Lt Craig, Sgt McFadden and Joe Arnott left us and it was everyone for themselves.
Our position was on the perimeter and only an overhead blast would have caught us because we were in a gully. I told the three gunners with me to stay together and make for the harbour.
We reached the jetty next to a landing craft. It was a desperate sight to see. The Navy boys were getting blown out of the water wholesale. After 60 years the sights I witnessed still give me bother.

Dorrian, Mr. - 2nd. February 1848 - Part of a  letter from John Orr of Portaferry to his father John Orr of Chicago recalling the demise of said Mr. Dorrian

Dr. Filson called up at 2 O Clock before going off to N.T. Ards [Newtownards?] to see Mr Dorrian formerly of Backall, who is since dead. Dr Chermside was here at 8 O Clock, and he was proceeding apparently as was expected, and directions given to continue the powders during the night. Dr Filson came home at 11 O Clock and then came up, and found such a change that the medicines had to be discontinued; his head was shaved and kept cold with vinegar and water, and a blister applied on [Sat] Evening to his Stomach which rose remarkably well, and with God's blessing was instrumental in prolonging his life.

.......................... During William Henry's illness we had uncommonly severe weather. Frost and snow. For three weeks Dr Filson was very much exposed and fatigued. From Saturday till Wednesday he was three times in N. T.ards either going or returning before day light, or after dark in uncommonly piercing weather - Wednesday the day of Wm Dorrian's funeral at Ardkeen was one of the coldest I have experienced. I met it at Gravestone. I think over fatigue brought on his illness - at least predisposed him to catch infection. Continue to write regularly. Your affectionate Father John Orr.

From Newtownards Chronicle February 1912 - Petty Sessions Court
Alexander Dorrian of Movilla Street was brought up in custody and charged with larceny of some wearing apparel belonging to John Hanvey of same address.  John Hanvey deposed that he lodged with Mrs. Maxwell at Movilla Street as also did Dorrian, both slept in the same room. The police came that morning to Walkers Mill where witness worked and we went with them to the house and discovered that his clothes which had been lying on the bed, had been taken.   Sgt. Smith stated that the accused came to the police station and informed them of what he had done and handed over two pawn tickets. Defendant pleaded guilty and said he had never done the like before, he said "It was the drink" The defendant was allowed out under the 1st. offenders act and case was dismissed.

Extract from an interview with Jules Dorrian by Stewart McClean concerning the exploits of Col. Blair "Paddy" Mayne during WW2
We were dug in just outside Benghazi with a battery of 40mm anti-aircraft guns when a vehicle was spotted approaching our positions. It turned out to be a Willys jeep complete with .50 Browning and twin Vickers machine guns. The lone driver was none other than Blair Mayne, he was bearded and wearing his service cap. He had heard that we were in the area and also that we had lost some men at Tobruk, which he was taking very badly. He stayed and chatted to all the men for about half an hour and then he left, driving off the way that he had came.

Newspaper Report - 5th. July 1942 - News has been received that Julius "Jules" Dorrian of 91 Movilla Street who was reported missing is in fact safe and well, the good tiding were received in a telegram to his wife who resides at No. 1 Townparks Cottages, Comber and in an airgraph letter to his parents who reside at Movilla Street

E.Mail - 14th. February 2013 - A great site which helps the grandson of someone born in Newtownards in 1918 and who lives in Canberra help to understand where his roots are!! The 1901 and 1911 Censuses of Ireland have a Dorrian family living in John Street (definitely number 45 according to the 1911 Census). Do you or any of your mailing list have any recollections of this Dorrian family? I do know one particular member of this Dorrian family (Dora Dorrian who was my grandmother) lived at 25 East Street and was a factory worker n 1920 just about the time she married a Thomas Ghee and moved to England with him. Their daughter was my dad’s mother! - Any directions gratefully received. - Regards, Paul Jackson, Canberra, Australia
March 2013 - Just thought I should let you know that thanks to the information you have provided, I have managed to link up with living Dorrians who are descended from my great gran’s brother via ancestry. How good is that?    email.gif (1490 bytes)
